Educating Clients on PR

When working in the public relations field, your clients may be confused on what your firm does each day. It’s important to always have consistent communication with your client, but sometimes they still may not understand your actions. We’ve put together a list of a few things to keep in mind when you’re discussing PR with your clients.

Remember you’re on the same team. While you may not work in the same office or on the same tasks, you’re both working toward a main goal, which is to promote the client’s business.

Share as much information as you can. Sometimes clients think that their PR agency should know everything that is going on in their business, but that’s not always the case. It’s important for clients to know that you need full transparency in order to do your job correctly.

Remind them that press doesn’t happen overnight. There are clients who will get frustrated that editors didn’t write about their business. Make sure they understand that publicists need to build relationships with editors first so that they will be more likely to publish press.

Be clear about what your goals are. Some clients may think they should be on the front page of The New York Times, but be sure to express what reasonable goals you have and why they will benefit the business. The more honest you are, the more your client will trust you.
