When to Move for a Job

Relocating for a job can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Whether the choice is personal, or you have been asked to by your employer, we’ve compiled a list of questions to ask yourself that will hopefully provide you with some clarity on your decision!

Am I paying for relocation cost?

Let’s face it, moving is expensive. If a company is relocating you, ask if they are willing to pay for the relocation cost. If the choice to move is personal, ask yourself if you can afford the loss. It can be easy to fantasize about living in a new state or city, but if you can’t afford it- take a year or so to plan so that you can in the future.

What is the cost of living?

Your salary in a small town might not hold up if you were to move to a larger city. Will you be receiving a raise? Take the time to think logically. If you are moving to a city where you don’t know many people, it is likely you will end up living alone. Look at active rentals in areas you would like to live to be sure that your salary can comfortably cover the prospective cost.

Do I have a long-term future with this company?

Packing up your life and relocating for a company is a big commitment on your part. If you can’t see yourself growing with this company, is it worth leaving your current life? Many people forget to take this huge factor into consideration, so make sure you can picture yourself being there in the future.

Will I be happy in my new city?

Work takes up 40 hours of your week, can you see yourself enjoying your time of in your new city? Is there a good music or art scene? If you enjoy the outdoors, research hiking around the area. You should be able to imagine a future there before deciding to relocate. You may fantasize about how much you’re going to love your new city, but be realistic. Don’t forget to ask yourself, will I be happy in this city without the job I am moving there for?

Rent it before you buy it!

If possible, visit the prospective city before deciding! Research local restaurants, coffee shops, and bars while you are there. Stray away from the tourist traps and live like a local during your visit. This will give you the ultimate feel of what your life would be like if you lived there. As tempting as the tourist attractions may be, remember that tourists go there for a reasons, and locals don’t go there for that same reason.
