How to Land Your Dream Job

Work. Whether we like it or not, we’ve all got to do it to survive. While it may sound cheesy, the saying “love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life” really can become a reality for some people. If this seems out of your reach, your mindset is probably the only thing holding you back. Like anything, if you work your a** off there’s really nothing that you can’t accomplish with dedication and hard work. We’ve compiled a list of tips to help you to not only get the courage to try, but to also help you land your dream job.

Have a Clear Goal of What You Want

Before you start sending out applications, be sure of the position you want. Make a list of the top five companies that offer what it is you’re looking for. For example, if you know that you want to be a publicist, what kind of PR do you want to get into? Do you want to work for a corporate company? Fashion? Music? Hospitality? Having a clear vision of where you see yourself will help to ensure you are getting what you want.

Be Ahead of the Curb

Oftentimes larger companies will fill positions before they even think about posting them online. Departments usually have inboxes full of eager candidate’s resumes reaching out in advance in the case that a position would open up. This is the way to do it. Research the department that you would like to work in and find the contact info for whomever would be in charge of hiring. This not only shows that you are eager to join the team and familiarize yourself, but it also helps the company find potential candidates easily. Most of these firms/businesses are extremely busy and look for a personal connection to potential candidates.

Practice Networking

A majority of the time, companies are not only hiring the candidate that they feel are a great fit professionally, but also the candidate they like. Yes, it’s important to perfect your resume and portfolio, but you also should try to be personable when interviewing. You want to leave that office and have the interviewer thinking “they seemed great!” You could be the most intelligent, qualified, experienced person out there, but most of the time if the interviewer can’t connect with you, you likely will not be getting a call back. Practice interviewing with your friends, family, or even in the mirror if you have to until you feel confident enough!

You Got This!

As Aaliyah once wisely stated, “If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again.” The only way that you are going to get to where you want to be is by putting in the effort. Don’t land the first position you apply for? Use it as a learning experience and use that momentum to keep you going for the next interview. If you stay persistent and dedicated, you will make it eventually. Good luck!
